What We’re Loving: Reply All

What We’re Loving: Reply All

Reply All logo background

We say goodbye and thank you to Reply All, the greatest pod that ever cast.

If you’re ever looking for a podcast that is as funny as it is well-researched, as earnest as it is thoughtfully produced, look no further. Let the Reply All team accompany you on your next trip down easy street.

The hosts signed off for the last time this week, but their catalog will always be worth revisiting.

This week marked the end of a Reply All, a podcast that truly transcended the medium into a wholly unique work of art.

Reply All has pushed the boundaries of storytelling, journalism, entertainment, and art for more than seven years. Podcasts like Reply All are the reason the category is so oversaturated today. Because they made magic and made it look easy.

Your neighbor may rant about the Saints in his garage and think he’s doing the same thing. I can assure you he is not.

Reply All was a podcast that really meant something. Now that every twenty-something with access to a microphone is blasting their voice across the internet, podcast recommendations are met with an eye roll. Trust me. I get it.

Each episode explores the internet and the parts of our culture that are inspired and influenced by the internet. Super tech-support episodes feature the team going on long journeys to solve listeners’ most pressing technology and internet problems. “Yes, Yes, No” explain a niche internet trend to the CEO of the parent company (Gimlet Media).

Reply All celebrates the beauty and mystery in life while pausing to poke fun at all of the insane “internet things” we accept as normal behavior.

If you’ve never listened to Reply All before, I am so jealous of you. You have an entire 189-episode catalog of some of the most entertaining and thought-provoking entertainment at your fingertips.

What We’re Loving: Simple Filter Plan

What We’re Loving: Simple Filter Plan

Simple Filter Plan Will Keep Your AC Cold This Summer

Simple Filter Plan helps us keep our filters clean.

By now, you can guess where this is going: We love Simple Filter Plan because they make life easier, and we love it when companies make life easier.

How often do you remember to change the air filter in your home’s air conditioning unit?

Depending on the number of people who live in your house, the climate, the circulation, and your air conditioning unit, you should change your air filter every 30-90 days.

A survey by The Zebra revealed that more than 80% fail to change their filters regularly, and 29% of respondents never change their filters at all.

A line illustration of the "hang loose" hand signal. How does Simple Filter Plan help?

It’s so simple. The folks at Simple Filter mail you an air filter wrapped in a single piece of easily recyclable cardboard at the frequency you select. It’s easy to sign up (credit card and address) and even easier to cancel (login and click cancel. No questions asked).

The best part is that it costs about the same as what you’d pay at the store. Seriously, a pack of 3-5 premium filters can cost more than $50 at Walmart.  Simple Filters start at just under $15.

Even at a competitive price, the best part is that it comes with a built-in reminder. It’s easy to remember to change your filter when there’s a filter sitting there.

Why Change Your Filters

Your air filters do the critical work of keeping dust, mites, pet dander, pollens, and other allergens that affect your breathing and make you sick.

Plus, by keeping your filters clean, your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to pull air through, allowing it to cool faster and longer.

As gunk is filtered out of the air being pulled into your air conditioning unit, it sticks in the filter. The longer the filter is in place, the more gunk blocking air from freely flowing through the filter.

Make it Easy

We try to highlight a company using technology to make things easier for their customers each week. This is the simplest solution to a small problem, but it’s also one less thing we have to worry about.

Do you know a company using technology to make life simpler? Let us know.

What We’re Loving: Sleep

What We’re Loving: Sleep

How Doing Nothing Can Improve Your Life

Sleep requires nothing at all. And more of it can increase our quality of life and work. It’s so easy. So why don’t we do it more?

sleep illustration

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Don’t worry about the age-old debate of whether six, seven, or eight hours is best. Every person is different, and so are their needs.

Only you know if you’re slouching on your snoozing. But chances are you could probably use a few more hours per week.

We’ll save you the evidence-based arguments and just say we’ve enjoyed a few tracking apps that have helped us think differently about rest.

RISE

Rise Sleep Tracking AppThis sleek app is powered by a bottomless supply of insights into bedtime routines. It also emphasizes everyone’s varying schedules and needs, so you don’t feel forced into a routine that doesn’t work for you.

And the best part is the way it gamifies sleep to make users want to erase their sleep debt.

Auto Sleep

AutoSleep sleep tracking app.

This app is less about user experience and more about charts and graphs. AutoSleep monitors all sorts of metrics to help users understand their health and habits to pursue better sleep.

And similar to RISE, AutoSleep tracks debt in a way that helps users plan ahead to stay rested.

Make It Easy

We are almost all more irritable when we’re tired. So next time you’re wondering if you should tap, “next episode,” or load up the XBOX, remember that tomorrow could be easier. And you could be easier to live and work with. So go to bed.

400 Five-Star Reviews and Counting ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

400 Five-Star Reviews and Counting ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for the love.

This week we hit a huge milestone: 400 five-star reviews.

five-star reviews

Every person at Carmigo is working to make selling your car easier. It’s what we talk about at work, from the marketing to the tech to the customer service.

Read some of them here. Or read all of them if you want, but that will take a while.

Why Five-Star Reviews Are Important to Us

Each one of these reviews validates our mission. And the corresponding comments (especially the occasional mixed review) give us an opportunity to tweak the code, adjust the process, or roll out new features.

If you’re one of the 400+ people who have left feedback, even if you were one of the two two-star reviewers or three three-star reviewers (at the time I’m writing this, Carmigo has exactly two two-star reviews and three three-star reviews). Every bit of feedback helped us make our tech better and our customer service team more accessible.

And if you haven’t tried Carmigo yet, give us a shot. It’s always free to list, and you have no obligation to sell unless one of our buyers meets your set price.

What We’re Loving: PokéWar

What We’re Loving: PokéWar

A beloved card game becomes a Pokémon Battleground

Last week David Marshall (one of our developers) posted a link in the group chat: “If anyone needs something to do over the weekend, just pushed a Pokémon-based version of War.”

Play the game here.

He took the most straightforward card game of all time, War, and added all the complexity (and cuteness) of PokéMon.

This is a one-button kind of game, so it’s easy for anyone to play. But it’s also the kind of game that hooks you in.

I played it for… well. I’m not going to admit how long I played. But I cruised right past my kids’ bedtime. They were happy about staying up an extra 30 minutes, so it wasn’t a big deal, but…

Sorry. I got distracted by the game again.

Why Pokémon?

Anyway, I asked David why he made the game — because it seemed like an odd combination. Here’s what he had to say:

“One day, I was walking through the kitchen and saw my wife and son playing War together, and it dawned on me, ‘Hey, I could probably make this game.’ And since my son is such a huge Pokémon fan, it only made sense to combine the two because I knew he would have such a great time with it.”

That’s one of the reasons he loves about being a software developer, creating something new and sharing it with others.

David said spending time being creative is not only something he enjoys but something that benefits the other areas of his life. “I’m a firm believer that we’ve grown too accustomed to consuming rather than creating as a society.”

Check out David’s game. And if you’re inspired, try making something of your own.

What We’re Loving: BBQ

What We’re Loving: BBQ

Everybody Does it Differently, Especially These Folks

One great thing about Carmigo being in so many different markets is the diversity of barbecue we get to eat. Every city in the South has its own take on these delicious smoked meats.

We’ve put together a list of some restaurants pushing the boundaries even further by taking unique approaches to their Q.

Memphis | DWJ Korean BBQ

Photo of BBQ restaurant DWJ Korean BBQ.

DWJ puts a twist on the classic for a different kind of barbecue experience by incorporating Korean heritage and flavors into their dishes. It’s excellent for family-style dining, and their hot plates keep the food warm while you eat, so nothing ever gets cold.

DFW | Panther City BBQ

Photo of BBQ restaurant Panther City BBQ.

This restaurant started as a food truck but has since moved into its own storefront. Taking an especially Texas stance, Panther City combines Texas-style barbecue and Mexican cuisine for one of a kind experience. And the BBQ breakfast on Fridays is not to be missed.

Atlanta | Fox Bros Bar-B-Q

Photo of BBQ restaurant Fox Bros BBQ.

Fox Bros Bar-B-Q isn’t necessarily a secret spot, but so worth mentioning. Along with delicious BBQ, they sell bottles of their BBQ sauce in local Kroger stores and was featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

Little Rock | Sims Bar-B-Que

Photo of BBQ restaurant Sims Bar-B-Q.

According to the locals, this location has the best ribs in Little Rock. The plating is humble, but the fixins are made with love and taste just like mom used to make (if your mom can cook, that is).

Birmingham | SAW’s Soul Kitchen

Photo of BBQ restaurant SAW's Soul Kitchen.

SAW’s Soul Kitchen is a hole-in-the-wall barbecue joint known for its Pork and Greens. This spot also boasts a variety of other Southern comfort food like fried okra, collard greens, and a bomb sweet tea chicken sandwich.

Huntsville | Luv Hawaiian BBQ

Photo of BBQ restaurant Luv Hawaiian BBQ.

Luv Hawaiian BBQ is another unique BBQ experience from the islands of Hawaii. Take your senses on a tropical vacation without leaving the 48 by trying out this Huntsville hidden gem. The lava chicken is a 10/10.

Nashville | Bringles Smoking Oasis

Photo of BBQ restaurant Bringles Smoking Oasis

Bringles Smoking Oasis is a cafeteria-style Nashville BBQ joint that is worth the visit. You go for the food but stay for the ambiance. Frequent customers love the Pastrami Brisket. It features indoor and outdoor dining with a patio that’s worth checking out.

A Shoe Store That Compliments Technology with Customer Service

A Shoe Store That Compliments Technology with Customer Service

What We’re Loving: Fleet Feet

This week we’re giving a bigFleet Feet make-it-easy salute to Fleet Feet for running the extra mile (😉 ) to make life easier for its customers.

Buying Running Shoes Sucks

For runners, finding the right shoe is tough. No two feet are the same. Seriously, my feet are completely different widths and lengths (something I found out at Fleet Feet). And no two runners have the same stride or style.

Read any article about getting into running and you’ll hear the same thing: Finding the right shoes is critical. Well, that’s easier said than done.

Most runners don’t have the cash to buy more than one or two pairs of decent running shoes at a time, so testing them is difficult. And to make it harder, shoe companies are always changing their designs. And to their credit, shoe technology has come a long way.

Make It Easy

So when a couple of us walked into Fleet Feet recently to see what all the fuss was about, we were delighted to see how easy they made finding a new pair of shoes.

We love easy.

The stores are equipped with a neat little imaging tool that sort of looks like it could house a hologram on a spaceship. Customers stand on it, and it scans their feet, creating a 3D model. The model is rendered in an iPad app and analyzed. They even send it to your phone.

It is so rad that I don’t mind sharing mine here:

Fleet Feet imaging tool

Anyway, they asked a few questions about our running routines and styles. They looked at our scans, and they pulled out a couple of shoes and insoles, each one a little more perfect than the last.

And the results are truly spectacular. We have two big runners on staff, both of which paid a visit to our local Fleet Feet recently. The difference has been night and day. Less pain, better recovery, longer runs.

We love it when a company compliments technology with a little hands-on customer service to make life easier. That’s our thing too.

Be Easy: A Coffee Subscription that Lets You Decide

Be Easy: A Coffee Subscription that Lets You Decide

Fellow Drops Makes It Easy To Sign Up, Easy To Quit, Just Easy

A line illustration of the hang loose hand signal. This week Carmigo is saluting Fellow Drops with a Do you have more Dollar Shave Club razors than you need? Have you finished Ted Lasso but still have an Apply TV+ subscription (or is that just us)? Fellow Drops is here to change that.

Unsubscribe options are hidden in tiny text in the darkest corners of subscription websites. But Fellow Drops works to make it easy to opt in, easy to opt out, and easy to press pause.

We like easy.

What Makes Fellow Drops So Easy

Fellow is a boutique coffee brand that curates the coolest and best coffee beans and brewing gear. As a part of that, they offer a subscription of sorts.

Anyone interested in having the company’s latest and greatest roasts regularly shipped to their door can sign up by sharing a phone number.

Instead of automatically shipping and billing your credit card every week or month, Fellow Drops sends a text, “You want this great new coffee?” (or something like that). And the subscriber responds, “Nah, money’s tight this month,” or “Two bags, please.”

To top it off, all of the Fellow Drops communications are genuinely helpful. The weekly texts are super informative and help you make a sound buying decision. They even include a brew guide video for each coffee

No obligation. No skip fees. Just coffee and freedom.

We literally got texts (yes multiple of us are signed up) with this week’s coffee offering while writing this. I’ve still got a fresh bag from my last order, so I said no, but I’m excited to see what next week brings. See for yourself.

Make It Easy

It’s easy to overthink the idea of goodness. What does a company have to do to be good?

Donations? Community support? Great benefits? Yes.

But, a business can also simply be good at what they claim to do. And even better, do it while taking a little stress off someone’s shoulders.

Be Easy is our attempt to highlight other businesses, organizations, and everyday folks who are reducing stress and increasing the quality of life for the people around them — even if it’s just a little bit.

Tornado Tosses Truck, No Big Deal For Texas Teen

Tornado Tosses Truck, No Big Deal For Texas Teen

Chevrolet replaces damaged Silverado with a brand new one

Line drawing of truck being spun in the air by a tornado.Riley Leon, a Sixteen-year-old high-schooler from Elgin, Texas, was caught in the destructive path of a Tornado. In a now-viral video, his red 2004 Chevrolet Silverado is lifted off the ground and spun around. It’s terrifying to watch, but then you see the driver speed away as if nothing happened.

According to Carscoops, the “16-year-old behind the wheel shrugs and drives away like a boss.” The teen also told Fox7 Austin that he was “on his way back from a job interview at a Whataburger 10 minutes away from his home when the accident happened and is now just happy to be alive.” Thankfully Riley only sustained a few scrapes on his left arm from the ordeal. I imagine it was nightmarish to experience, but at least he is safe now.

The tornado truck survived too, kinda

KXAN Austin tracked down the truck Riley Leon was driving and the truck made it out relatively unscathed, too. The Drive reports that Chevrolet received a lot of PR from this and took it one step further. In a collaboration with Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet in Fort Worth, Riley will soon receive a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT All Star Edition in Cherry Red. This is definitely a silver lining and a new truck will definitely help the Leon family. It looks like Chevrolet is also sending the American Red Cross $50,000 to help Texas after the storm.

Chevrolet trades tornado truck for new Silverado

Chevrolet also released a statement on the viral video, “We are thankful Riley is safe, commend his driving skills during a frightening situation, and our hearts are with other families in Texas that have been affected by these storms. Due to the quick action of the team at Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet, the new truck will be presented to Riley and his family.”

Chevy taking this moment to connect with Riley and his family and also donating to Red Cross looks great for the brand. It’s always nice to see happy endings to stories like these. It’s a minor effort on Chevrolet’s part, but it’s still amazing to see large corporations go out of their way to make someone’s day better. This is a great example of not overthinking corporate social responsibility.
